Death Rays and the Popular Media, 1876-1939: A Study of Directed Energy Weapons in Fact, Fiction and Film - William J. Fanning Jr.

The subject was interesting, but the book itself wasn't. It's a good resource for someone interested in the history of ray weapons, but not a pleasure read by any stretch of the imagination.
